Let it read us.

I was reading a book the other day and came across this amazing line. The book said "Let scripture read you" Now I have heard that line before but this time it opened up a new idea. Let's be honest, when we read scripture we read it to affirm what we already believe. We read passages that are familiar and we understand them, they make sense to us. They affirm what we believe. We read passages like John 3:16 and skim over it because we get it. What if, we allowed scripture to read us? What if instead of reading through the lens of how we see the world, scripture was the lens that saw us. Alright, so that may not make sense. Let me explain. Allowing scripture to read us, means that we won't understand everything. We can't explain all of God through systems and dispensations, but that he speaks and reads our hearts and our motives through his scripture. Doesn't the unexplainable and mysterious make our God more beautiful? Isn't it all about our hearts? Doesn't he want more than anything that our hearts will seek after him? What if we read scriptures like Matthew 19:23 23Then Jesus said to his disciples, "I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. 24Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." And we wept over this because we realized that we are the top 5% of the worlds wealth? What if we allowed God to test our hearts and our motives. Have I figured this out? Is there a formula to making this happen? No, but I think it starts with our motives. We must allow scriptures to read us. We must allow God to test our motives, actions, and hearts through his word instead of reading what we already believe into it...May the peace of Christ be with you.

Interesting thoughts, but I am not sure that it is possible to escape reading scripture through one's own lens.
Also, could you clarify what you mean by God reading our hearts and motives through HIs scripture? Are you suggesting that God needs a medium through which to read us?

You have interesting thoughts. Here's what I mean. We have a tendency as humans to come up with our own code of life and then read scripture to justify our lives. God doesn't need the medium to read us, but if the scriptures are God breathed, as I believe they are, then isn't that a way in which God speaks to us? I mean think about Paul, what were his epistles? They were letters written to new churches on how to conduct life and church with their new paradigm of belief. Shouldn't we allow that to read us? Should we allow that to transform us instead of coming up with our own code to live by? I think we as Americans living in a Western culture miss a lot of what was taught by an Eastern Jewish Rabbi.

I suppose it is just the phraseology "let it read us" that doesn't make much sense to me. But if this is just a way of saying that we should read the scriptures as a whole and take from them what was intended, rather than reading into it our own preferences, then that sounds good to me.

Nevertheless, this is a tricky thing to do as we humans are always confined to our own perspectives and must view the world and even scripture through our mental filters.
